A HEALTHY SHOULDER

9855.jpg

FEAR?

  1. That I will say stupid things while under anesthesia or I’ll snore!
  2. That my “stud” days are over.
  3. That I can’t use my fancy corkscrew to open my wine!
  4. That I can’t sign my American Express receipt.
  5. That I can’t get my nose jewelry back in! (they make you take it out)

OBVIOUSLY I AM JUST KIDDING (well a little)

So, I do have a little anxiety about this.  I’ve seen the MRI and it’s pretty torn up.  My surgeon Dr. Kumar has a GREAT reputation around here so the accuracy of the surgery does not concern me.

I think my biggest fear is the inability to do normal independent things for a while.  Michael will take care of me as he always does.  However, I get a little “feisty” (that’s kind of an understatement) when I can’t be independent.

I will try my hardest not to get snappy and  seem ungrateful!  I promise.  I will go in with sweet thoughts of healing.  I have been diffusing my doTERRA ON GUARD essential oil.  It is an antibacterial, antibiotic, and overall healer.  I have been putting on the bottoms of my feet each night and rubbing it on my shoulder.  I believe!
  • Good thoughts = Good outcome.

FIND YOUR HAPPY PLACE

2fd2963fff83de2c5f4a2a96648099a7.jpg

This is a very familiar quote.  You see it painted on everything from stickers to tee shirts.  I used to have it under my signature on my email.  Today as I sat on the beach gazing out at the unbelievable colors of the sky and the warm blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, I decided to make a list.

3 things that make me really happy!

#1.The feel of sunshine on my skin.
There’s just something about the sensation of the warmth from the sun on my skin.  I always let out a small sigh when I feel it first thing in the morning.  I feel lucky and alive when the sun warms my face. Atapa Snana is a yogic phrase for the healing science of sun bathing. http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-5999/10-Healing-Benefits-of-the-Sun.html

#2. The “perfect” yoga space.
If you have been reading my blog you know I have struggled for many months. Studio after studio to find “the studio.”  When I went back to college at the ripe old age of 43 (yikes!) I found myself not even able to write a sentence on a paper that was due until my surroundings were perfect.  I had to have sunlight. Go figure, look at # 1. I had to have a certain sound of very low music, and I had to have my cover picture page done.  This picture was THE most important part.  When the scene was created, the “creating” could begin.  This madness allowed me to graduate with honors I might add...LOL!
So, back to yoga.  The space that I need to practice has to feel, smell, and sound right to me.  I have found that space I am happy to announce.  Countless times of rolling out my mat as I drag Michael along each time, listening to, I mean NOT listening to any music at all and burning up the American Express at $15 a class.  From the moment we walked into Body and Sol http://www.annamariadayspa.com and I listened to the soothing music, looked at the “coastal beach chic” furnishings and took a peek at the clean prayer flagged lined studio “I knew this was it!” My new yoga home. http://www.islandyogaspace.com  I teach my first class there on Monday and I couldn’t feel more at home!

#3. Love.
That’s is a pretty broad topic now isn’t it?  I love the calm, peaceful yet exciting feelings that comes with love.  When I love without “gripping” I feel a cool sense of freedom. Sort of like the sunshine on my face and way the perfect yoga space feels. Simple, pure love brings in sight a raw natural view of things.  I like that. A lot.  So listen to the whispers of your heart when they call to you and know you are safe in the arms of love.

In this wonderful world, I have found “My Happy Place.”  It’s not really a place after all, it’s a feeling.

YOU MIGHT BE AN ESSENTIAL OIL ADDICT IF.....

doTERRA Essential Oil Winners

As Jeff Foxworthy says “You Might Be A Redneck If “... ( You can look at 300 ways on this site called Country Humor, http://www.countryhumor.com/redneck/mightbe.htm) Well, I’m pretty sure as you read 10 ways each day I use Doterra Essential Oils this saying would be fitting for me:

YOU MIGHT BE A DOTERRA ESSENTIAL OIL ADDICT IF….

  1. You wake up to a glass of water with 1 drop of Lemon EO (stands for Essential Oil.)
  2. After coffee, you use the Oil Pulling Technique and use Coconut Oil and On Guard EO.
  3. That is then followed by a good teeth brushing with more On Guard ( I just really love this stuff!)
  4. Workouts are shared with either Peppermint Water or Lemon, Lime, and Wild Orange Water.
  5. Shower follows with face care: The BEST skin care regimen I have ever used. Face Scrub, followed by Pore Reducer, Immortelle (miracle stuff!), Anti Aging Lotion. Sounds like a lot of work but I just do it like I brush my teeth without even thinking about it.
  6. After that my body needs hydrating (I do live at the beach!) so I blend my Favorite EO with Fractionated Coconut oil that disappears into my skin.  I really like Balance (A grounding formula.)
  7. Morning smoothie with loads of green veggies and usually Lemon EO and I’m ordering Ginger EO this month so I don’t keep running out of the root.
  8. I take a few vitamins for hormone health and Alpha CRS, a Cellular Vitality Complex.
  9. The diffuser is changed from the Serenity at night to a more uplifting smell of any of the Citrus EOs or Peppermint!
  10. And finally, lunch and dinner always has at least Lemon EO or Lime EO added to it as I make my own salad dressings and they are a perfect combo.  I am trying Cilantro, Basil, and Rosemary this month.  I’ll let you know!

As you can see, I love these oils.  It all started with my teaching friend Skye, our Art Teacher and a drop of Wild Orange in my water.  The rest is history!  I liked the flavor of my water so much that why pay retail for the pure oils when I could buy them at 25% off as an independant distributer.

And so I did.  I bought a $35 order of 3 oils (packaged together) The 3 oils in the photo. I got 3 oils I loved and that was about 6 months ago and each month I try something new.  Yes, if I tried I could also have extra income from sharing these awesome products with people.  Maybe I’m doing that now :)

I use these oils in way more than 10 ways each day, but 300 ways like Jeff Foxworthy would be a bit much to ask of you!

Here’s to good health with DoTerra Pure Essential Oils!

I WANNA GO WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME

2013-10-4328cheers09.jpg

I can hear it now, the song from the popular T.V. show Cheers. “You wanna go where everybody knows your name.” Even as I watched the show I felt a sense of community in that bar.  You could feel comfortable enough to tell all your woes, lies, and jokes, without being judged. (that may be pushing it!)

How to be a student
It has been a very long time since I was a full time yoga student.  In the past 12 years in Fernandina, Fl I have been in “front” of the class.  Whether it was a spin, yoga, step, dance, water fitness class, I was the leader.  I made the rules, set the mood, chose the music, and felt a responsibility for my students’ happiness and results. I am comfortable in this space.

Stepping way out of my comfort zone I made a move to the west coast of Florida to live with the man I love.  My husband Michael.  Michael enjoyed my yoga classes the few times he was in Fernandina and knew Debby the yoga teacher and elementary teacher.  Some 300 miles away from Fernandina Michael has met Debby the student.  I am hear to tell you and be the first to admit, I don’t play that part very well at all!

I had the fantasy I would sit back and take all the yoga classes I could.  I would try numerous styles, and teachers.  I would get to experience things I have never experienced before through the eyes of a student.  Well, things weren’t quite that pretty!  Do you know you have to PAY for yoga!  Not a small fee either, in fact, at $15 a class there were some high expectations.

What I have learned is “being a student is hard work.”  It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran or newbie, it’s a gamble.  Studio after studio I hoped to feel, hear, and smell all the things I was used to in Fernandina.  It never happened.  Most instructors in this area don’t even play music which is a mind blower to me since music sends me to a place that makes everything beautiful.  Sounds like a mind altering drug. Class after class I convinced Michael to join me.  We both came to the conclusion “I’m not a good student if I am not in control!”  I need to have and experience a yoga class, not a lecture.

I am however, happy to say that almost 5 months later I have found that studio. (fingers crossed) It looks right, it smells and feels right and they play music. The teachers and students are warm and welcoming. I know more names in one class than my 5 months “wandering.”  I am a student again, and I am paying for yoga and for an experience that so far feels peaceful and inviting.  Kinda like “Cheers” where everybody knows your name.

Wish me luck!

YEP, I DID IT! "OIL PULLING"

SWISH, SWISH, can you hear it?  I’m on my third day of OIL PULLING. http://www.everythingessential.me/ApplyingOils/OilPulling.html

I know, I know, it was just down right weird.  I thought this would be a good time to write about it since it is in my mouth as I write! Three days ago I decided to try it.  I went to Publix and bought….”are you kidding me?”  The kitchen timer just went off!!!!!  Be right back.

SAMSUNG SGH-i667_002210.jpg
Wow, I gotta tell you, I have come to really love this! Gonna get off track here for a minute..ha.  So, the 20 minute timer goes off, I spit (yuck) the oil out in the trash today (it’s not much) and I swear to you, my mouth feel so expansive.  I really can’t explain it.  I said to my husband ( I love saying that.LOL) “Michael, my mouth feels so empty and full of space”  He smiled like he always does and supports all the “off the beaten path” things I do.  “Cool” he said!  Anyway, I rinse my mouth out a few times with warm water to get all the oil remains out and then I brushed my teeth this morning with what I thought would be 1 drop of On Guard essential oil...3 drops came out and I proceeded to brush.  What a sensation!  My mouth now is dancing and singing.  La, La, la!

The past 2 days I have not added any essential oils to my “oil pulling” but today I added peppermint. It was delicious and it seemed effortless today.

Day 1: I got up and looked at the kitchen timer 3 times while trying to “swish” for only 15     minutes...ha!
Day 2 :I walked on the beach at sunrise and “swished” for 20 minutes and I only looked at my watch 1 time.
Day 3:...well you just heard that story.  I have committed to do this for one month and then go to the dentist (which I have neglected for almost a year or more.)

So my friends, the ingredients are in the photo and the doTerra link http://www.everythingessential.me/ApplyingOils/OilPulling
http://www.everythingessential.me/ApplyingOils/OilPulling.htmlis really helpful and I actually watched a short video from a dentist on You-Tube before I tried it. In short, I love it!

THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT IN ITALY

How many of you drink your water each day from your tap?  I know I certainly don’t...it taste terrible.  I ALWAYS drink filtered water with doTerra Essential oils in it ( now that I have discovered those!) But here in Italy you can drink right out of the hotel faucets!  For the first week we were drinking the water from the mini bars and spending a fortune on small expensive bottles of water.  Then one evening I was looking up things to do I decided to ask “Google”...lol, who else would I ask “If you can drink the water in Italy?” I could almost hear the laughter over the internet!!!!!
http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/italy-travel-tips/

You are simply miles from the Swiss Alps...duh!  Who knew???  So I found page after page reassuring me it is not only okay to drink the water but it is some of the best water you will likely drink outside of a bottle.

So, I went into the sink...tip towing as if I were afraid someone would see me doing such a weird thing. ha. I turned on the faucet, filled it up (gulp) and I took a very small sip.  It was cold, had no taste, and I didn’t keel over right there in the room :)  OMG, it was good.  I must say I bragged to Michael and told him all about my discovery and how I researched it and how he should try it!  The only way he will know the “true story” is when he reads this blog...giggle.

So, you can even drink out of the fountains in the streets.  The picture is of a fountain that was dried up but this would be one you could drink from.

Until next time,
ciao!

FOOD IN ITALY!

CLAMS, MUSSELS, AND LEMON, PASTA WITH MUSHROOMS AND TRUFFLES, PIZZA WITH ARUGULA!

We spent the day in a small village in Portofino Italy. This small little slice of heaven has shops, restaurants, a castle, and a few “over the top” mansions.  After climbing what seemed like hundreds of steep stairs up to this fabulous castle( www.castellobrown.it) touring and walking back down again….we sat for a late lunch.

The food is so fresh and so good that day after day my mouth waters for what’s coming next.  We have sampled, clams, mussels, pizza, pesto lasagna, fish, anchovy and potato cakes, pasta and mushrooms with parm. cheese and truffles, and a mixed salad here and there.

The internet service here is very slow so I will not be posting much.  Enjoy the images and know it really did taste as good as it looks!

Ciao!

TRAVELING TO ITALY

In about 4 hours Michael and I will begin a wonderful journey to Italy.  Our honeymoon will begin in Tampa Fl, on to Chicago, then to Milan Italy.  From there we rent a car and journey to beautiful Lake Como.

We will experience FOOD, YOGA, OILS, and the local culture.  This part of Italy is know as the Italian Riviera.  The weather this week is in the 60's and approaching 70 for the weekend.  It will be a nice break from the 90 degree days we are having in Longboat.

Trip Advisor has a fun site to see whats TRENDING in Como.  Enjoy and I will be posting from Italy!

WHAT IS YOGA, REALLY?

I often wonder when the day will come when someone will ask me “What is yoga, really?” I ponder all the different ways I would answer. I get really tounge tied for the appropriate, concise, and professional answer.  Ummmm...well that is what my personal practice was about today.

My mind was so “busy” during my practice it was making me crazy.  I kept telling myself, “3 more slow breaths” but as I took the breaths I keep thinking about writing about this.  I kept thinking about why I am having so much trouble connecting to a yoga teacher and studio here in my new home.  I have all the time in the world to practice yoga.

As I listened to my yoga music on my ipod, and moved in no special order,  I just felt what my body needed this morning...it came to me.  2 years ago after both my 200 hour trainings, yoga became no longer an “exercise, or a workout” yoga was, and had to be “an experience” for me.

I finished my practice (the 30 minutes I could squeak out!) and as I sat up and put my hands together in prayer (this is my favorite part by the way) I began to cry.  I had an “experience” this morning on my mat and I felt something.  I couldn’t even tell you what I did or any of the postures by name. I HAD AN EXPERIENCE.

That is what yoga is to me….

This video is a reflection of the emotion of yoga.  I hope you can feel it too.

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification.  It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus, and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums, and even throat.

File:Sesame oil.jpg

Say what??????  I like to believe I know about “alternative health” methods for just about everything!  Never heard of this until last night.  My friend and colleague Skye announced and recorded an interview last night on the Jacksonville 11:00 news about doTerra Essential Oils.  The doctor who was speaking was giving recommendations for the use of doTerra oils with OIL PULLING.

So I did what anyone would do...I GOOGLED IT!  I was shocked and humbled by all the folks out there more aware of oil pulling than me...LOL  It really makes perfect sense (the method) and sounds quite easy.

You know where I’m going here don’t you?  That’s right, I really want to give this a try!

Anyone done this before???? Send me a comment and educate me more on this subject and I will keep you posted!

swish, swish…..

SIMPLY EATING GREEN

Some of my former colleagues would ask me each day at lunch (in the teacher’s lounge) “Do you eat SALAD every day?" With a very proud look on my face I answered back “of course!”  That didn’t win me any new friends, just looks of “how boring.”

As you can see from my photo, salads can be a very happy fulfilling meal.  Just ask my husband Michael! He’s eaten
“green things” he’s never heard of before.

My Monday Salad

Kale
Swiss Chard
Carrots
Tomato
Corn
Parsley
Walnuts
Sunflower Seeds
Snack Sprouts

Homemade Tahini Dressing with doTerra Lemon Essential Oil added to tang it up!

Mix it all up and dig in :)

WHY ARE WE SO OVERCOME WITH EMOTIONS AFTER A YOGA CLASS?

Well, why are some of us so overwhelmed by emotions during and after our yoga practice?

Me:Unfortunately, I have found very few classes except during my teacher trainings with Kimberly Waugh (radiantlifeyogaschool.com ) and Joyce Savitz  ( jacksonvilleyoga.com) and some workshops with Lisa Long (longlisa.com ) to have tears flow.  These exquisite teachers created the space and “allowed” me to feel safe enough to let the emotions flow. No judgement and complete surrender is what it takes for me.

A few answers to the question from a few yogis you might know.....

  • Elena Brower: For myself, almost every time I practice in a class setting, you’ll find me with tears streaming down my face. I love learning, I love being present in my body, I love being led, and I love how the practice always yields a feeling of strength and connection to myself and to my family. I hear folks commenting on a range of emotional experiences, from joyous to melancholy, but they always come away from practice sensing some sort of healing.
  • Kathryn Budig: The yoga mat is our own personal island where any emotions we feel—joy, dread, exhilaration or despair—can all surface safely here without judgement. A good yoga practice taps directly into our core and reality of what’s happening in our lives, so it can be an emotional release depending on what we’ve been denying or holding in. It’s a fabulous place for sweet release and surrender which leads to healing.
